The Essence of Yoga

This post discusses the essence of Yoga. Information here will help you (as a beginner to Yoga) to understand what Yoga really is in its essence.


Basically, the science and philosophy behind Yoga says that you are just a small fragment of really enourmous universe that we live in. When you as a human being learn to live in a communion with the previously mentioned enormousness, you are able to achieve and live in union with that something that is much bigger than you.


There is a special term for the previously mentioned achievement or living in union: To attach yourself or tap into something bigger (universe). This tapping or attachment enables you to walk the true path of happiness.


So, whenever you are in the union with the universe or whenever you live in a communion with the universe, you are basically flowing along with the force, which enables you to discover the real truth.


And when you are able to discover the real truth, you come close to realization. But realization is only attained after your words, thoughts and deeds are based on previously discovered truth.


Perhaps the best thing to do is to conclude with the sayings of Tim Miller. He says that people go to Yoga lessons and studios to learn and benefit from Yoga, but that is not the essence. The essence begins when you actually leave the lesson or studio. In Tim's words: "it’s all about being awake and being mindful of your actions".

Read what Yoga is not

If you read my previous blog posts, then you know how Yoga can be and in fact is easily misinterpreted in today's world. This is mostly due to common stereotypes about Yoga that are alive out there.


Besides stereotypes, Yoga can sometimes be confused with other things and activities as well. Because of that, I think it is appropriate to make a blog post about What Yoga isn't too.


This way I can explicitly tell you what Yoga is not, which will hopefully help you as a beginner to further understand the Yoga.


Yoga scholars like Feuerstein and Bodian also helped me understand Yoga by telling me what Yoga is not. So here are a couple of things that Yoga is not:



  • Yoga is not calisthenic exercise, where you make headstands, lotus postures or some other pretzel like poses. It is true though that Yoga has many postures (Hatha Yoga is the most known for that), but they are there only to make you connect yourself with your inner feelings.

  • Yoga is not a religion or a system of meditation. While meditation certainly is part of the Yoga, but it is only the part of the process of bringing ourselves into the realm of the spiritual. Why Yoga is not a religion has already been explained in my previous blog posts, so you might want to read those too (in case you have not done that already).


As you can see, there are many things that Yoga is not. It is easy to confuse Yoga with any of the things mentioned above, so hopefully this post helped you with the overall understanding of what Yoga is and what it is not.

What is Yoga?

Find out what is Yoga and when it first came into the Western world


Today I want to discuss a little more about what is Yoga. To a beginner (or someone who is not familiar with the subject), Yoga can look somehow complicated.


Someone could even say that it is a dizzying array of physical manipulations that transforms apparently pleased humans into pleased human pretzels. This pretzels thing is a joke ofcourse, but you got my point hopefully.


As noted already in the introduction blog posts, some people even think about Yoga in terms of stereotypes, which makes the whole story even more upsetting.


For instance: term Yoga can also be a synonym for cult or and other kinds of archaic spirituals beliefs, which require you to quit your day joy, sell your house, move in the Jungle and never look back. Not to say that none of the above is true!


In fact, Yoga is very basic or ordinary activity to perform. Just take a visit to the countries like India, Japan, China where it has been practised for generations. What you will find out it that Yoga is really something pretty ordinary, like going to Fitness or Gym for example.


Perhaps you already know that. After all, Yoga has been present in our society for quite some time now. The first time the practice of Yoga came to west was in year 1893. This happened due to the visit of Swami Vivekananda, a guru from India, who visited World Fair in Chicago in the previously mentioned year.


Swami Vivekananda is nowadays known as someone who has sparked the interest in Yoga in the Western world.


The meaning of word Yoga


The word Yoga itself originates from the Sanskritic language: Yug, which basically means to "yoke, bind, join, direct" one's attention. Besides this meanings, Yoga can also connote things like fusion, union and discipline.


A definition of Yoga is also defined in The sacred scriptures of Hinduism. According to this ancient belief system from India, Yoga is defined as unitive discipline that leads you toward your inner and outer union, harmony and joy.


This is also stated in book Living Yoga, which was written by two experts in Yoga, Georg Feuerstein and Stephan Bodian.


In general, Yoga is most usually interpreted as conscious living: a tapping into your own inner potential for being and feeling happy. In Sanskritic language this is refered to as Ananda.

Advice for Yoga Beginners

Yoga for beginners: Advice before you start learning and practising Yoga - Part 5


It is time for the final lesson of my Yoga e-course. What you will find out here is advice every beginners to Yoga should know about. Do not worry though, I will still be publishing information on Yoga for beginners in the future, so this is not all you will get from me!


I am sure you know it by now that Yoga is an ancient and interesting way of uniting your body and your mind, which provides you with many proven health benefits on physical as well as emotional level.


The chances are you have already decided to go and find yourself a good Yoga program to start with. Perhaps you have already registered at your local Yoga center or maybe you have purchased yourself a DVD course or even an e-book.


At this moment you are probably very energized, optimistic and dying to get going! Ofcourse, who wouldn't be! After all, you are about to start something that can completely change your life to better. But before actually going to Yoga practice, there are a couple of important questions you should ask yourself.


Before you start with answering the questions, note that there is no right or wrong answers here. The main purpose of finding answers to the questions below is to stimulate your thoughts and to give you the mindset, which every student or beginner to Yoga needs in order to succeed and benefit from this really remarkable activity!


With that said, here are the questions you need to ask yourself before you start with learning and practising Yoga:



  • What are your reasons for beginning with a Yoga program? Are those reasons realistic?

  • How advanced is your Yoga program in terms of physical strain? Are postures hard to perform? Is there a chance you injure yourself while doing the selected Yoga program?

  • Do you have clear goals for pursuing Yoga program? Do you know what you want to achieve?

  • Do you have time and commitment to really get the most out of your Yoga program?

  • Is there someone in your life who wants to negatively talk you out of this personal development path you are about to embark on? How will you handle this person? Will you avoid him or simply ask them to respect what you are doing?


Give yourself some quality time and think about the questions above. Ofcourse, many other questions will arise as well, so make sure to consider those as well.


When you have the right answers, you will feel clear and confident about experiencing Yoga and your life changing experience will begin!

What types of Yoga exist out there? - Part 4

By now you know that Yoga is not religion, but more like an approach to life in general. It can be treated as science as well, because its positive effects on your body and mind are scientifically proven.


To continue with my Yoga e-lesson part 4: I am going to introduce you to different types of Yoga that exist out there. But before I go and do that, perhaps it is appropriate to tell how variety within Yoga contributed to its promotion and spread in to the Western world.


Lets assume for a second that Yoga would consist out of one idea or language with very strict and unchanging rules. How would that help Yoga to become as popular as it is in today's world?


Well, not much I would say because it is much harder for only one idea or language with strict rules to spread outside of those who practise and follow it. Simply said: in such case the idea would be limited to only few lucky people who would actually find it on their own.


On the other hand, when a particular thing or activity has multiple ideas and ways of doing it, it spreads itself much quicker. This is simply because more people will get in touch with it, more people will talk about it and more people will accept it in their lifes.


Therefore the variety or different types of Yoga have in the last 110 helped a lot with spreading it into the western civilisation and into the world in general. Without this variety, Yoga would maybe still be limited and practised only to those areas where it originated.


This implies is that Yoga is very agile and flexible. As such it was certainly able to overcome cultural, religous and country boundaries with no problems at all.


Nowadays it is spreading faster than ever before. Just think about how many times you see or hear about Yoga on television, newspaper or even from friends or colleagues who are passionately talking about it.


At the same time, this diversity or variety of Yogic activites can also make someone to quit doing it after only one session. For instance, someone starts learning and practising the type of Yoga that is very difficult and unsuitable for beginners.


This can ofcourse make you feel uncomfortable as the activities are just too hard to handle for someone who is just starting out. Perhaps this has already happened to you as well.


But do not worry though. The advice I am giving to you on this Yoga for beginners blog will help you get over that. I will make your transition into Yogic activities as smooth as possible. Just stay with me.


Six major types of Yoga


With that said, here are the six (6) major types of Yoga:



  • Tantra Yoga,

  • Hatha Yoga,

  • Raja Yoga,

  • Jnana Yoga,

  • Karma Yoga and

  • Bhakti Yoga.

How Yoga can help you to be healthy and happy

In my first two lessons I introduced you to the benefits that learning and practising Yoga has for your body. By now you know why Yoga is in some parts of the world also regarded as science.


By that I mean that results (such as making your immune system stronger, sleeping better, reducing hurt in your muscles and body joints,... ) can be measured in scientific, objective way.


This time I will write how Yoga can help you achieve other important things as well. This can be anything from feeling happy and good with yourself to achieving certain goal that you have in your life, such as losing weight or stop smoking for instance. Yoga can help you with that too, you know.


Here is how Yoga can help you be more positive by simly making you aware of what is good for you and what is not. If you are familiar with western psychologists such as Freud and Jung, then this should make sense for you. But even if you are not, I will try to explain it as simple as I can.


Whenever you as a human being make a decision or set yourself a certain goal, something inside of you activates itself (some people call it will, others call it awareness).


In that very same moment this awareness (or will if you want) starts to monitor the negative thoughts that are floating constantly through your mind. But instead of eliminating this negative thoughts one by one, Yoga rather suggest you to just observe the floating that is going on.


This is because through observing, the struggle will become exposed and therefore no longer nourished by your unconscious, unobserving mind. That will further on result in the diminishing of those negative thoughts that you have been previously struggling with. They will no longer bother you, so to speak.


As you continue to just observe your negative thoughts (rather than attacking them directly) you also lower your overall level of internal negativity. And when you lower your overall internal level of negativity, you lower your external negative behaviours!


At that point it is much easier for you to drop habits that all not contributing to your overall well-begin, such as excessive drinking, emotional overeating or smoking. This is simply because you get the perspective that you need to realise that something is actually make you feel bad and not opposite.

Yoga benefits are proven scientifically - Lesson 2

In the first part of my e-course on Yoga for beginners I told you how Yoga affects your physical body. In my previous posts, I also pointed out that Yoga (or practising Yoga) has very little to do with religion.


Naturally, it can be religious thing as well, if you want it to be, but by itself Yoga is not religious in a way of focusing on belief or faith. In other words: You do not have to believe or have faith in anything particular to learn, practise and benefit from Yoga.


Therefore, I would say that Yoga is more of a science than anything else simply because it is understood, learnt and practised in term of the scientific methods in many countries and places around the world. Just take India for example. They refer to and approach Yoga as a science.


Just the same as in other scientific disciplines, Yogic science builds its principles based on causes and effects, which means that observations and results of Yoga are produced objectively. For a yogic master to be credible, one needs to be highly educated in many sciences like physics or biological sciences for instance.


Perhaps you are wondering why am I talking about science here, when this post is titles as: Why is practising Yoga beneficial for you? Well, this is simply because when it comes to science, results can be tested objectively.


That means that positive benefits of Yoga, which I was talking about in my previous posts, are tested in objective way. Noone has made up the results or effects of Yoga. They were empirically proven in a scientific way!


It is your right to ask yourself questions like: Why should you even bother to learn and then practice Yoga in the first place? before you actually decide to experience it. And because of that, I wanted to give you an anwser to that, so you can see that the positive results of Yoga are real thing.

How Yoga affects your physical health

I am starting my online Yoga e-course with part 1, which is titled: Yoga and your physical health. I am sure it will be very interesting and informative for you as a beginner to Yoga.

The first thing you should know is this: In Yoga there is no differentiation between your body and your mind. This is something new for the western world as we are used to think about mental health and physical health as two different things.

With that said, Yoga can be understood as a way of helping your body (and mind) heal or improve itself through a process of releasing blocked tension and energy in your body. Further on, Yoga helps with making your muscles, tendons, joints, ligaments and other body parts work to the fullest.

According to Yoga, human beings are optimally built by nature itself. That means your body is designed in a flexible and agile way. Being stiff or lacking in mobility is for Yoga a sign that your body is unhealthy or out of alignment.

So, whenever you find yourself in a Yoga lesson or class, or perhaps doing Yoga mat in your home with the help of a Yoga video or DVD, be aware that you are working on your health and well-being. Practising Yoga is proven to help you achieve the following benefits for your body and mind:

  • it increases your flexibleness and range of motion,

  • it reduces the hurt in your muscles and joints,

  • it strengthens your immune system,

  • it strengthens the capacity of your lungs,

  • it increases your metabolism (this is good for losing your weight as well),

  • it helps you sleep better (mostly because Yoga improves your breathing and better oxygenates your body).


Learning and doing Yoga obviously helps you with several things related to your health and the quality of the life you are living.

To sum it up: Yoga does not only help you with getting more flexible, but it also detoxifies you because of the increased blood flow in various parts of your body. Your muscles will become more tone and invigorated as well due to various postures performed during your Yoga practices.

Therefore, Yoga does not only provide you with mental benefits (such as relaxation, calmness and happiness), but also gives you llots of clear and proven physical benefits too!

In case your goal is to lose weight, or perhaps staying in good health during winter time, then Yoga is certainly something you should be doing on regular basis. It will help you with your goals just the same as it will help corporate executive get the stress out of his mind.

What you will learn about Yoga on this blog

The first thing you have to learn about Yoga (you probably already know this but anyways) is that you do not have to change your religion in order to enjoy all the health benefits that Yoga has to offer.

There are stereotypes out there about Yoga, perhaps one of them: such as that people practising Yoga belong to some kind of commune or something. Ofcourse, not to say that this is not true. There are literary millions of people out there practising Yoga every day and as a consequence enjoying the health benefits that derive from Yoga activities!

Perhaps the best thing for you as a beginner to Yoga, is to think about it as a very simple, accessible and ordinary activity, such as exercising or going into fitness for instance (whatever you like better). As I said in my first blog post, the people who will most benefit from reading this blog are beginners to Yoga.

If you have heard about this activity on radio, or watched it on television perhaps, then take the things here that I am going to tell you as a clear, simple and playful introduction that will help you with your well being in general.

Ok, I have to admit. Even if you already have some experience with Yoga (Maybe your friend took you to a Yoga lesson a couple of years ago, but for some reason you did not follow up at that time), you will benefit from the information here as well! Introduction to Learn Yoga Online or Yoga for Beginners

We have seen many changes in the world in the last couple of decades. The world has become a much smaller place than it used to be. Just think about how little it takes you to be on the other side of the world. Or about the time needed to talk to a person across the ocean.

The world itself is becoming a "Global Village" as Marshall McLuan put it. What used to be very strange or unknown to us is now getting part of us. Yoga is great example of that.

Practising and learning yoga was something that Western world was not very familiar in the past, but nowadays, Yoga is becoming part of our every day life. Ofcourse, this has not happened by coincidence.

The reason for it is very obvious: Doing Yoga gives you much health benefits on many levels: from physical and emotional to psychological well-being.

But despite that, some people are still reluctant to learn and do Yoga. Maybe you are one of them. This blog is here to get you over that and help you get started. Thus, I have named it How to learn Yoga or Yoga for beginners.

It is written for beginners mostly, but even experienced practicians can benefit from the information that will be written here.

By now, you as a beginner probably know that yoga gives you a lotsof enjoyment with no negative side effects at all. On the contrary actually: You benefit greatly from it. But perhaps you are not familiar enough with Yoga to actually take the first step.
